I build custom arts and crafts and mid-century modern furniture, both reproductions of existing pieces from various makers such as Stickley, Limbert and Nakashima and custom pieces brought up to date for use as entertainment centers, poker tables and desk/workstations. All the pieces on these pages were items I have built for previous customers or are currently available for purchase.

If you are interested in having a particular piece built please contact me via e-mail.

After a discussion of your requirements an estimate will be given and if you choose to continue a design sketch will be supplied for a $100 charge which will be part of the deposit for the final work. Once you have agreed to the piece being built a 50% deposit will be required with the final 50% due prior to delivery. Depending on our backlog orders generally take 12-16 weeks to complete.

My arts and crafts style pieces are generally made from solid quarter sawn white oak with plywood used only on areas that are not exposed, like a cabinet back. But even for internal parts of a piece, like shelves, bottoms and center dividers I use solid wood, just pieces with less interesting grain and that contain more defects, like knots and pith that would not be suitable on the outside of a piece. Traditional construction techniques such as mortise and tenons and dovetails are used to insure the structural integrity of the pieces and serve as the decorative details the arts and crafts ideal intended.

I finish arts and crafts pieces with a multi-step process that simulates the fumed oak look of an antique piece (Color Samples). Two shades of aniline dye are applied, the first to give the raw white oak a fumed oak base color and the second to give the wood from the reddish brown to the almost dark ebony brown seen in Stickley pieces. After a seal coat is applied a glaze is used to fill the pores of the white oak which gives a nice contrast to the background color. Over this several more coats of either shellac or hand rubbed oil based varnish are applied.

Mid Century modern pieces are mainly constructed from hand selected American Black Walnut and Cherry, although all woods from domestic to exotic can be used. Again mostly solid wood, hand picked for the best grain, is used and traditional joinery techniques are employed. A hand rubbed tung oil finish is applied to accent the grain on these pieces.
